The significance of the 5 elements in Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an alternative medicinal system that incorporates natural elements to treat diseases and boost physical and mental well-being. The name Ayurveda combines the words’ ayur’ and ‘veda’ in Sanskrit, which mean life and knowledge, respectively. Hence, the name Ayurveda symbolizes the knowledge or science behind life. This medicinal system is based on the belief that any imbalance or stress on a being’s consciousness gives rise to different diseases. 

Ayurveda prescribes lifestyle changes, natural treatments, and therapies to balance the body, spirit, mind, and surrounding environment. This treatment also consists of internal purification processes, which are usually complemented by herbal remedies, massage therapies, regularly practicing yoga, and meditation, and finally, being on a healthy and nourishing diet.

The origins of Ayurveda can be traced back to the Indian subcontinent. Its theories can be dated back to the Vedic age. The material detailing various aspects of health and diseases found in the Atharva Veda is the fourth Veda, part of the Vedic scriptures of Hinduism. Charaka Samhita is the earliest codified document of Ayurveda. Sushruta Samhita is another relevant document that details many surgical procedures. By comparison, Charaka Samhita, the treatise on Ayurveda, focuses on internal medicine.  

The school of Ayurvedic medicine emphasizes the role of the interconnectedness of the forces within the universe, ‘Prakriti,’ the constitution of the human body, and ‘doshas,’ meaning various life forces. The five elements of Ayurveda

The entire concept and school of Ayurveda are built on five distinct elements. These elements can be visualized as the essential building blocks, which form the basis for the entire macrocosm, or universe, and the microcosm or the human body. Any life is not possible in the absence of these five critical elements. All beings in existence occupy a space within the universe they share. The five elements are ether/space (akasha), air (vayu), fire (agni), water (apas), and earth (Prithvi). Heat, achieved through the fire and sun, is essential to sustaining life, water, and earth. 

Space and air are also crucial to existing. The entire material universe is composed of these essential elements, and all living beings are made up of them in different proportions. The sages who developed this medicine system segmented all the five parts into three distinct types: a combination of ether and air, called ‘Vata,’ ‘pitta,’ which combines water and fire, and finally, ‘Kapha,’ which combines earth and water. The entire concept and theory of Ayurveda are built around these core principles. 

Ayurvedic practitioners believe that the entire cosmos consists of these five elements and are called ‘Pancha Maha Bhutas.’ The origin of five distinct components can be found in the ‘Pancha tanmatra’ include sound (shabda), vision (Roopa), touch (sparsha), taste (rasa), and finally, smell (gandha). While each element consists of all the components of ‘Pancha tanmatra,’ there is a predominance of one. Understanding the five elements can help in unraveling the secrets of nature. Ayurveda can assist in achieving a balance between the five different elements. When there is an imbalance in any one component of the body, it can have a detrimental impact on the mental and physical well-being of an individual.

The cosmos, built up of all these elements, is broadly similar to the ingredients found in the human body. The elements can be found in the various tissues and functions of the human body. Ether or space 

The element of ether, or ‘akasha’ in Sanskrit, is the first among Ayurveda’s five aspects. It is among the most subtle elements referred to as space, constituting the essence of emptiness. The origin of this element is ‘shabda’ or sound. Shabda is sound in its most ancient and eternal form. Vibration emerges from this primal space long before it can be heard in human ears. Sound and ether are indissoluble and cannot be easily distinguished from one another. Due to the intimate relationship that sound and ether share, the ear is the associated organ for sensing it, and the mouth is the organ of action since it emits sound. 

Experiencing a loss of hearing or losing the voice can signify an imbalance of the ether element within the body. The unique characteristics of ether mean it can be felt much more due to the absence of the opposing quality than its presence. A great example to illustrate the fact of the ether element is the cold. People feel cold due to the absence of heat. Space or ether is light compared to the heaviness of water and earth. This element is subtle as it does not have the visible and marked presence of the other elements. In Ayurveda, the body must balance this element to achieve elevated well-being.

Air

The element of ‘vayu’ in Sanskrit, meaning air, is Ayurveda’s second most essential element. It comes after ether since it evolves from space. Air results when the potential inside area is activated. Motion or kinetic energy can be represented through the air. Sparsha, or touch, is the origin of this element. It is the potential of the experience of touch. Both the air around us and touch are inseparable. Skin, which helps in touching, is the associated sense organ of air, while the hands, through which someone can touch different beings and objects, are the associated organs of action. Hence, in Ayurveda, the inability to touch or feel is primarily due to an imbalance in the air element. 

Typically, the air is cool, mobile, rough, and subtle at the same time. Although quiet by nature, one can feel the effects of it everywhere. An absence of air can kill off any living being almost instantaneously. The ancient sages described this element in five different forms, inward or prana, outward or Vyana, upward or Udana, and finally, downward or Apana. The force that works toward balancing and stabilizing all such movements is called Samana or the center. The five pranas and activities are essential to understanding the true meaning behind the air element in Ayurveda. 

Fire

The fire element, called ‘Tejas’ in Sanskrit, is the third of the five significant elements (Pancha Maha Bhutas). It comes in third place because it evolved from ether and air and contains the essence of those elements. Ether provides space for fire, and the atmosphere allows the fire to burn. Because there is air, the fire will not stop. Heat and light manifest themselves within the fire element. Fire is an energy generator within the body, just as the sun is an energy generator for the earth. 

It represents all energy sources in the world: solar, hydroelectric, nuclear, fossil fuels, and biodiesel. Fire is the process of releasing energy from its inception. There are different kinds of fire inside every being, and balancing those is essential to maximizing well-being and health. The origin of the Fire element is the ‘Tanmatra of Seeing’ called Roopa. Lupa means to shape and color. Both shape and color are the results of perception. Roopa is a Tanmatra, the original unmanifested form of the elements of perception, light, vision, and, therefore, fire. Fire and sight have a special relationship. 

Fire provides light for perception. The eye is the vehicle through which light is digested and perception occurs. Ayurvedic practitioners believe that vision disturbance is primarily a disorder of the Fire element. The feet are the working organs associated with the fire element. It’s our feet that react to what we see. Using the feet allows a person to change direction based on perception. Not only can you change the path, but you can also change the strength of your progress. The choice of movement and power of the effect is a function of the element’s fire. 

Knowing each element means knowing its nature. Fire is hot, light, wild, flowing, sharp, clear, and soft. Fire is neither stable nor mobile and does not stand still or create movement. Inherent in fire is air, and it is the air that gives the fire its mobility. Fire is subtle, but the effects are so clearly observable that you have a clear idea of ​​what it is. The most noticeable is the heat of the fire. We associate the fire element with visible fire. The ancient rishi idea of ​​fire was broader. Fire represents the power of light, warmth, brilliance, energy, understanding, metabolism, and transformation.

Water

The water element, called ‘apas’ in Sanskrit, is the fourth of the five significant elements. It comes in fourth as it evolves from the ether, air, and fire. Water contains within itself aspects of the other three elements of him. Ether gives water space in which it can exist. Air gives water movement and the ability to flow. The relationship between fire and water is more esoteric. Air creates friction that creates the heat of a fire. Nature gets denser with each evolution from one element to the next. 

As the fire thickens, it cools and takes on a larger shape. It makes up the shape of water. Water protects against the dissolution of the ether element, the roughness and movement of the air element, and the heat of the fire element. 

The water element relieves all pain and inflammation in the body. The origin of the water element is Tanmatra of Taste, Rasa. Rasa, in this context, is the source of the taste experience. Rasa is the causative energy that provides the potential for gustatory experiences to occur. It’s not the taste itself. However, since water leads to the taste sensation, Ayurvedic practitioners believe any loss of taste is due to an imbalance of this element.

Earth

The element Earth, called ‘Prithvi’ in Sanskrit, is the fifth of the five significant elements. The earth element evolves from each of the four elements (ether, air, fire, and water) and contains the essence of those elements, thus making it the fifth. Ether gives the space to exist on earth. The air provides the earth with subtle movements visible at the atomic level. Fire (energy) lurks within ‘Prithvi’ and is bound together by natural chemical bonds that hold the structure together. Einstein quantified this relationship in his mass-energy equivalence theory. E(energy) represents the element of fire. While M (mass) represents the soil element, C represents the speed of light and the essence of wind.

When matter becomes denser, gasses (air, ether, fire) coalesce into water (liquid matter). The process of densification continues until the material becomes solid. Earth is an element that represents the tangible nature of matter. Element earth represents solid matter and the structure of the universe. The earth gives form to the human body and all creation. Earth provides a structure or channel through which all other elements flow through. In Ayurveda, there is a renewed focus on this element. The origin of the earth element is the fragrant Tanmatra called Gandha. The state of the earth’s elements in the body and the sense of smell are closely related. 

Gandha Tanmatra is the root cause of the olfactory experience. It is seed energy or potential, and its origins start from the causal body and sprout into the earth element. The Earth element builds the potential for olfactory experience in the subtle body and the structure through which olfaction can be experienced in the physical body. Therefore, the gandha or smell ‘Tanmatra’ is not the smell itself, but the feeling of smell depends on it. Anosmia reflects an imbalance in the earth’s elements. The sages who developed Ayurveda believed that this loss of sense of smell could be detrimental to health.
